    Extra custom fields in Shopify

Shopify allows the addition of new metafields, that is additional extra custom fields that help the merchant to enrich information associated with e-commerce data model.

So, store objects, such as products, variants, collections, customers or orders, natively provide a predefined set of information, which can be extended with additional custom field: the metafields.

    Metafields: how to?

You can add metafields to your store directly from your Shopify Admin.

You can connect most metafields to your theme by using the theme editor when it supports the dynamic sources. Otherwise the theme code can be edit.

The set of operations supported for metafields are:

    Define

    Assign

    Edit

    Delete

    Archive

Let’s explore each item in more detail.

    DEFINE

As we have seen, in Shopify, the metafield is an additional custom field allows you to extend an existing data model.
Each metafield is made up of:

    ASSIGN

After being defined, metafields can be associeted to a Shopify element. This connection can be done or by the theme editor or using Liquid, the Shopify’s templating language.

    EDIT

It enables configuration changes for the metafield.

    DELETE

First of all, consider that deleting metafields is a permanent action and can’t be undone.

Metafield deletion can be done choosing the following options:

    • Delete only the metafield definition
    • Delete both the metafield definition and all associated metafield values.
